DACOU celebrates the beginning of spring with September’s painting of the month, Awelye Atnwengerrp by the late artist Minnie Pwerle. The U-shaped body paint designs for which Minnie is so well known are interspersed with clusters of small tight circles to represent the fruit of the bush melon, which was her Dreaming.
These symbols of awelye, meaning womens’ ceremony, weave rhythmically back and forth across the canvas in bold greens and blues, celebrating and capturing the energy and movements of women dancing and singing around open fires in the soft red sand of the desert.
Minnie was a custodian for her country and the expression and gesture in her work reflects the deep connection she had to her land, her tradition and her ancestors.
