- Emily Kngwarreye
Artist: Greeny Purvis & Emily Kngwarreye
Year: 1994
Size: 124x71cm   Scale of paintings
Medium: Acrylic & ochre on linen
As the oldest male of Alhalkere, Greeny is the custodian of all the Dreamings of this Country. The stories in which Emily Kngwarreye based her paintings around belongs to Greeny. Even though Emily was much older than Greeny, she was required to seek permission from him to paint these stories. The important relationship between Greeny & Emily has often been overlooked in Emily’s success as an artist. In this particular painting, Emily & Greeny have combined their painting talents to create ‘An Enriched Country’. Greeny paints the middle of the canvas using a series of lines and circular designs. These represent the people’s campsites that are found throughout the Utopia region. Emily painted the remainder of the work using a number of different colours mixed with ochre. These colours depict the land after heavy rainfall which brings to life the vegetation and wild flowers, transforming the landscape into a blaze of colour.
